The incredible story of the North East munitionettes who not only helped sustain the First World War effort, but also played football to raise money for wounded servicemen, widows and orphans.
In 1916, as men were conscripted, women stepped into demanding industrial roles and proved they could excel in work traditionally reserved for men. They also took to the football pitch, with hundreds of workplace teams forming across the country. In the North East and Cumbria, dozens of teams emerged, producing some of the game's earliest female stars.
Among them was Blyth Spartans Ladies' striker Bella Reay, who scored an astonishing 130 goals in just 30 matches. Wor Bella celebrates the strength, determination and heroism of these remarkable working-class women whose story was almost forgotten.
From the team behind The Cramlington Train Wreckers, Carrying David, Hadaway Harry, The Great Joe Wilson, Mr Corvan's Music Hall and Centenary, this acclaimed one-woman play has captivated audiences across the North East and beyond. Following a sold-out revival in 2024, including performances in London and at Newcastle Theatre Royal, Wor Bella returns to the stage in 2027.
